Japan Review / Grawl!x (free entry)

Two Reckless Yes bands on the same bill. Japan Review's first outing in quite some time and the first since the release of their Juno sees an expanded line-up which means they can be quite a bit noisier. Japan Review are joined by Derby's Grawlix whose solo sets have been described as "sorcery". And they are.

JAPAN REVIEW

Japan Review is the experimental pop project of Adam O’Sullivan with an ever-changing line up of musicians helping to build his ethereal drone soundscapes.

Initially formed in 2014 a debut EP was written and recorded with fellow Beach Volleyball alumni Dom Ashton last year, which was released through Reckless Yes in spring 2019.

Taking influence from The Radio Dept., Four Tet, Mount Eerie and Beach House their sound may be best summed up as sad dance music.

GRAWL!X

Grawl!x is the solo project of Derby-based musician and filmmaker James Machin.

His first release with Reckless Yes is the final album in his trilogy about grief; Appendix was released in April 2018 on vinyl and digitally. It follows Good Grief (2015) and Aye! (2016) and like them has melancholy moments but are affirming, even uplifting, soundscapes of love rather than loss.

This third album sits alongside the Grawl!x written and directed short film Fleeting, and includes contributions from Haiku Salut, composer Richard J Birkin, and guest vocals from Pet Crow’s Danielle Cotterill and Mighty Kids’ Shelley Jane Newman.

Rude Mechanicals - Something Wicked

Music and mayhem from Miss Roberts and her rude and wicked minstrels.
Also featuring:
Cowboy Flying Saucer
MeU=MeU
+DJs Enri and Silly Boy Blue
Probably do £5 on the door again.

Rude Mechanicals
Rude Mechanicals often get compared to The Birthday Party, Tom Waits, Captain Beefheart, The Tigerlilies and early Roxy Music. Their style has been called Post-Punk, Swamp Blues, Dark Cabaret and we particularly liked a recent suggestion - Psycho Cabaret.

Tom Robinson described them as “wild, wicked weirdness... a little bit Flying Lizards, a little bit Native Hipsters and a great deal like nothing you've heard before..." (Tom Robinson BBC6 Music). They are lead by the flamboyant Miss Roberts and it is the surreal products of her imagination that permeate the band.

Cowboy Flying Saucer
Cowboy Flying Saucer is an incarnation spawned from a conversation in a Walthamstow pub. An experimental vehicle for sonic fun and adventure.

Influences: time, space, electricity, tardigrades, God Saves The Earth Flying Saucer Foundation, The Middle Ages, smoke blackened paper, spring reverb, hypnosis, isolation, beer, celestial bodies, insects, rebounding objects, internal ramblings, dreams

"TOP TEN MUST SEE CABARETS"

The List , Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2017

"…we were often surprised, things took different turns and there was plenty to enjoy and even be fascinated by…Plenty of comedy, cheeky one-liners, wit and a bit of rule-breaking – the ingredients of good, offbeat cabaret… left the audience clapping with delight …."

Paul Levy from Fringe Review

“I felt like I was sixteen again in the bedroom laughing with my girlfriends”

PE Presents: Tragic Night 2

Good God! It’s that time again. In celebration of the last Tragic Night, let’s think back to a quote from our good friend F. Scott:

'I want to give a really BAD party. I mean it. I want to give a party where there’s a brawl and seductions and people going home with their feelings hurt and women passed out in the cabinet de toilette. You wait and see.'

Come and experience a dazzling array of musicians who sing very well and play instruments very well, and witness your own decline from stardom to impropriety.

Electric Land Blues

Electric Land Blues are proud to announce that on Friday 01 February 2019 the Coconut Club will be returning bringing live music and righteous vibes to you all!

That’s right, after the success of previous nights, the Coconut Club will return to George Tavern with three excellent bands and a vinyl only DJ spinning classic dancefloor fillers. What better way to see out dry January and welcome in the first Friday following a month of sobriety than with some live music and plenty of alcoholic beverages?!!

Bands that appearing on the night are:

Headline Act:

Electric Land Blues – Righteous grooves and hard rockin’ riffs from London’s own Blues Rock Monsters. We’ll be joined onstage by a couple of special guests too.

Support Acts:

Tiger Moths – Beautifully crafted, Americana inspired blues tunes from four Cats who aren’t afraid to rock it up when necessary.

Friend of Dave – Joining us again with his one-man overdriven beatbox Blues vibe it’s Friend of Dave!

Then we have:

DJ Yamabushi – Spinning classic vinyl until 3.30am, the master of the wax disc DJ Yamabushi returns…

And it’s all taking place at the wonderful George Tavern, 373 Commercial Rd, London E1 0LA.

Doors are at 7pm and entry is £5. You don’t get much in London for a fiver these days but if you support the Coconut Club you’ll be getting three top bands, a DJ and you’ll also be supporting the George Tavern and helping another classic longstanding London venue fighting closure
